ETOX Dinner at the SOT meeting

Hello all:

The annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology is being held this year in San Antonio, Texas on March 10 - 14.  If you are interested in getting together with other UCR alumni, students and faculty for dinner on Monday March 11th, please send me an email (david.eastmond@ucr.edu).  I look forward to seeing you there. 

Virunya Bhat's abstract to be recognized at SOT

The abstract submitted by Virunya Bhat, a current graduate student, and her co-authors was selected as one of the best 10 abstracts in the area of risk assessment being presented at the annual SOT meeting this year.  Her abstract is entitled, "Concordance of Transcriptional and Apical Benchmark Dose Levels for Conazole-induced Liver Effects in Mice".  Her co-authors are Drs. Susan Hester and Steve Nesnow of the USEPA and Dr. David Eastmond (UCR).  Our congratulations to Virunya for this recognition of her work.

David Eastmond re-appointed to CalEPA board


David Eastmond, an Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program faculty member, was recently re-appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve on the Carcinogen Identification Committee.  One of the California EPA advisory committees that helps identify carcinogens under Proposition 65.  A news release with more details on the appointment can be found here. 

In addition, he was recently quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle in an article about Prop. 65 and the workings of the committee.  That article can be found here.

Schlenk quoted on NPR

Dan Schlenk, ETOX faculty member and professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, was quoted on National Public Radio in an article on behavioral effects of small amounts of drugs in the environment.  It also briefly describes some of his work in this area.  A link to the article and audio clip can be found here.

Cranor's work highlighted by UCR


Carl Cranor, distinguished professor of Philosophy and ETOX faculty member, is profiled on the UCR Living the Promise website.  On the site, Carl describes his research and his ongoing interests in public health.  There is also a short video in which Carl Cranor gives a tour of his house and illustrated various household products and describes the associated chemicals of concern.  The website and the video can be found here.  Again, our congratulations to Carl for this recognition of his work. 

Curras-Collazo wins APS teaching award

Maggie Curras-Collazo, an ETOX faculty member and associate professor of Cell Biology & Neuroscience, was selected by the American Physiology Society to receive the 2013 ADInstruments Macknght Progressive Educator Award for her dedication to the teaching of undergraduate students.  The APS Education Committee indicated that it was impressed with a course that Dr. Curras-Collazo developed entitled Educational Training in Neuroscience Outreach which trains neuroscience majors at UCR with teaching skills that they use to educate members of the public.  Our congratulations to Maggie for this nice recognition.  More information can be found at the InsideUCR website.
